The software filters the data, detects and measures cracks while integrating complementary measurands such as strain, temperature, force and displacement signals. Predictive calculation models then allow for a comprehensive assessment of the structure.

Our Background

High definition fibre optic strain measurements started to become available on the market about ten years ago. The sensical team has acquired a wealth of experience with this technology in academic and practical work, almost from day one.

Ever since, we have integrated sensor fibres into building components and applied onto surfaces. Examples include application on rebar, laminated onto and into reinforced plastics, embroidered into fibreglass mats or applied to surfaces such as steel, concrete, wood and GFRP.

Not every application was a success from the start. Yet, the multitude of trials led to a deeper understanding of possible obstacles. No easy path, but imperative for a reliable and effective use of this technology for your requirements. A selection of projects, including concise descriptions, can be found below.

In the course of its practical work the Sensical team has developed a close contact with the manufacturers and distributers of measuring technology and component suppliers. This relationship is invaluable in finding suitable and reliably working sensor solutions.

Prestressed ­Concrete T-Beam

Task

Measuring strain, detection of crack formation and quantitative determination of crack widths on reinforced concrete T-beams, prestressed using steel- and CFK- tendons.

Method

Local high-resolution strain measurements on the surface of the concrete using retrofitted fibre sensors

Technology

Fibreoptic strain measurements using Luna ODiSl, strain gauges, load cells and displacement sensors.

Reinforced Concrete Beam

Task

Measuring strain as well as crack- formation and development on a reinforced concrete beam in a load test with 11 load steps.

Method

High-resolution strain measurements of the rebar by attached fibre optic sensors.

Technology

Fibreoptic strain measurements using Luna ODiSl, strain gauges, load cells and displacement sensors.
